How reliable are freelancers from Up works?
Main Post:
New to this subreddit and found out about Upworks. Wondering if someone has a stellar track record showing are they legit? Or is the site another one filled with fake reviews? I am skeptical because some people with amazing credentials are a fraction of the cost of others. Keep reading you get what you pay for but I have been duped myself with high fees and poor results. Thoughts?
Top Comment: I’ve hired a handful of quality people off Upwork.

Who is Upworks target audience?
Main Post:
I’ve been looking for side-gig to do in my spare time to make some extra money. Having stumbled onto Upwork, my question for you all is who is their target “worker”?
My only training is a bachelors in biology and I have a skill for writing. How useful that is for Upwork I have no idea yet. I’m noticing a lot of high pay work is for programming or software related stuff that requires a lot of effort. Thats definitely not my field or my target work.
I’m seeing a lot of different kinds of jobs being posted with varying pay. Is this platform more for “serious” freelancers who are using this as a main source of income? Does this site have a space for people like me who would pick and choose easier/ low effort jobs for relatively low pay? Possible proofreading, transcription, article writing, etc.

Goddamn. Now it all makes sense
Is Upwork even worth it?
Main Post:
I just joined upwork and I haven’t started working, but already feeling disappointed. Today, a person who posted a fake job listing tried to scam me. I knew soon into it and confronted them. But, after reading posts in this community it seems that lots of people have other issues with Upwork clients (besides the occasional scammers). On top of that, Upwork take a large percentage of your profits if you do get a contract. Now im wondering If its even worth it to start ? Does anyone actually make good enough side money on there or is it more head aches than it’s worth? P.S I would only be interested in working a few hours per week. I have a 30 hr main job.
Top Comment: I can’t really say what’s it’s like as a side hustle but I’ve been freelancing full time exclusively on Upwork for 3 years and I’m making a very decent living. You have to take it seriously, have great soft skills on top of your experience and spend some time to build your profile and find good clients, but yes, it’s definitely worth it.
Is Upwork worth it in 2024?
Main Post:
I am not sure if I am feeling this way because I am overwhelmed with negativity after reading many posts here
or is it because of the ridiculous amount of connects that each job require
or is it because there is too much competition which lowers the pay
is Upwork worth it? Is freelancing worth it? Do I need to find a job? Or should I find a better freelancing platform?
What do you think, is Upwork (with all its cons) still worth it? I am starting to doubt myself a lot and need some positive feedback
Top Comment: It's because successful freelancers don't come on here to complain. They are busy making money.
How realistic is Upwork?
Main Post:
I’ve got around 5 years of in-house ppc experience and i’m considering using Upwork to earn some freelance money on the side of my main job. 10-15 hours per week.
Has anyone had a good experience with Upwork? It looks pretty overcrowded so i’d love to hear from anyone currently in a similar situation before investing the time in.
Ideally i’d just like some extra income from small/medium sized jobs without having to run a full freelancing gig.
Top Comment: Upwork has been fantastic, but with some caution: real clients will pay whatever is needed as long as you are actually good personal responses are much better perceived. The amount of people using bots are easy to spot( I also have run over half a million there as a client) give real value such as a loom video, it only needs to be about 5 minutes or less. Practice this, then in the future put it on a landing page with a Calendly link. Make sure you keep your proposals to the point don’t lower your budget... real clients have no problem paying higher rates if you are actually good at what you do.
Is Upwork worth it in 2023?
Main Post:
Hello. I am currently looking for work and I am thinking about using Upwork. Now, I have looked up this question, but I got answers from 2020/2022.
Now, if Upwork a good source for temp money, how can a digital artist get started on this website?
Thank you for the assistance.
Top Comment: It's becoming more and more like freelancer(DOT)com. Trashy job posts, scams, promotions, backlinks
My experience after 8 months as a freelancer on Upwork
Main Post:
I started freelancing as a developer on Upwork in November of last year. I started with 30$/h and made around $30k on the platform. Currently, I try to get into 65$+/h projects but I have a really hard time. My custom feed outputs only around 1-2 decent projects per day that I sent proposals. Almost always they get 50+ proposals. Often still nobody gets hired.
I made some conclusions:
- There are far too many freelancers and too few clients on the platform (but I guess this is obvious when following the sub)
- Most Upwork clients are small businesses or sole entrepreneurs. They are willing to hire internationally. They are looking to hire with an hourly rate that is not sustainable in a lot of Western countries. And there are freelancers from low-wage countries that are happy to work for this rate. When not happy working for these rates, Upwork has a lot less to offer.
- When looking into the better-paying clients, most of them are from the US. Not being from the US will always be a disadvantage when competing for higher-paying jobs.
So for me, this means I cannot compete with the low rates in the international market. And I'm also barred from the local US market. There are still some opportunities but I don't think it is enough to hold a future for me. I will keep watching the Upwork feed and fighting with you guys over the sparse good jobs. But I also will look into other acquisition channels and probably have to go more into contracting for local companies.Did anyone come to a similar conclusion? Or do you think differently, happy to hear some other thoughts.
Top Comment: I suggest LinkedIn (search the job boards for remote jobs) and if you have the $$ pay for Sales Navigator to do very targeted outreach to people that will actually want/need your services. Ive been on Upwork full time for a little over 3yrs and have made $200k+, and around $100k from clients found on LinkedIn/SalesNav
Upwork is simply not worth the time anymore. I suggest people carefully document how much time they are spending finding and dealing with clients. You're probably making half of what you think you are.

I know people complain about connects, which I do feel is a problem. However, the costs for me are trivial. An extra dollar or two doesn't matter for the type of jobs I land.
However, what does matter is the TIME I spend finding those jobs. Time spent finding jobs is UNPAID time. So if you spend two hours finding a job and your rate is $100 an hour, that job you land doesn't make a profit until the second billed hour. The first two hours just pays for the time you spend landing it.
Most people and new freelancers look a their time as free when searching for work, but it's not. That's unpaid time you are working. If you had a 9-5 jobs, you would have been earning money, benefits, and retirement savings during those hours.
Right now, Upwork is just taking too much time to find good clients. Most clients are one-offs now. There are very few that want long term work. Most want phone calls and zoom calls to talk, once again, wasted time. Most balk when you want to charge them for that.
Then there's just going through all the bad jobs, then writing custom proposals.
After all that, Upwork takes 10% off the top.
The whole process is no longer worth it if you keep track of your time.
I'm now switching to cold prospecting, which I've always had good success with. It also lands higher paying and higher quality clients. Thing is, Upwork just made me lazy. It was easy to login and find work, so I got away from cold prospecting and chose upwork out of laziness.
I bet many others did the same. If so, those days look to be over. Don't waste your time chasing a platform that doesn't really exist anymore.
Top Comment: You’re just describing freelancing. Finding clients is part of it, Upwork or not Upwork.
Is Upwork still worth it in 2024?
Main Post:
Hello everyone,
I have worked on upwork in 2022 and since then then had 2 quick contracts in the last year, but still managed to get a good job score and got Top Rated recently.
My goal is to get 1 to 2 clients in software developement in the next 3 months, but I see that one proposal would cost at least 16 connects, and buying 150 connectects costs 15 dollars.
I have activated the so called "availability badge" with maximum set at 35 connects per week for 2 weeks, and I got 2 profile visits and only one interview request, which wasn't worth it.
So my question is: does it really worth it buying connects and spending time currently chasing contract on Upwork?
For example: I am ready to spend 100 dollars if it brings me +1000 dollars contract
PS: I attached a screenshot of my profile
